I had read about Garrafon de Castilla (not to be confused with Garrafon Park) and we decided to give the beach club a try. For $150 MXN per person, we were able to use the showers, restrooms, beach chairs, and umbrellas at this little resort. This location is a protective cove good for snorkeling! I was finally able to relax and read my book for a little bit in the shade before taking a dip and swimming with the pretty fish! The beach club also had servers coming around! We ordered drinks (food was also available) and relaxed! I got my go to margarita and Garrett had a jack and coke which he very much enjoyed! Having the showers available was SOOOO nice! So we decided to go and explore a near by beach we had passed early that day and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the ocean! We found a very cute beach called Playa Mascotas (The Pet’s Beach). We had the entire Airbnb, beach and pier to ourselves. We sat out at the edge of the pier, drank our margaritas, and enjoyed watching the sunset! Honestly, we got so lucky with this place. After seeing Garrett and I brought our own snorkeling gear, he gave us streamlined life jackets (life jackets are required) instead of the bulky orange ones. We would move faster in the water and have a better time with the sharks. Once we got going, Raul explained how they find the whale sharks by simply scanning the ocean for fins and water disturbance. Whale Sharks are filter feeders right below the water and have gills so the don’t come up for air. He also explained how this season, due to the “sargasm” (excess seaweed), they were seeing less and less sharks, so fingers crossed, we would find them. We didn’t necessarily feel in a rush since our Airbnb check in time was 3pm and we would have all our luggage with us. Our shuttle was right on time and took us to the Ultramar Ferry. The shuttle ride to the ferry took about 25 minutes. I enjoyed looking out the window and seeing more of the “real” Cancun. Our goal was to try some elotes (corn), a famous Mexican street food, find Garrett the ONE souvenir he wanted (a silly shirt), and get dinner. We got some elotes from a street vendor near the pier. We both opted for the cup version, mine plain, Garrett’s spicy. Both of us found it just alright. I enjoyed it until I was about halfway done, then it was meh. Note: Elotes is corn, mexican cream, chili powder, and cotija cheese. We walked around afterwards until we found Garrett the perfect shirt before making our way back to Coco’s, the same restaurant we ate at on the first day. But my gosh…..it was breathtaking! The decor was nice with a dining table, king sized bed, and a MASSIVE shower. The view was what really did it. You could see the ocean from both sides! We immediately made ourselves at home, cranked the AC, and tried to decide what to do for the day. We made our way to Playa Centro which was right in the “center” of the ferry/ tourist area. We stopped and picked up some sunscreen (for Garrett’s poor, sun beaten, alabaster skin), picked up water, and went and found a spot on the beach. To be honest, I only lasted for about 10 minutes. I got in the water, but was sweaty and sticky by the time I made it back to Garrett, sleeping on the lovely beach towel I had bought him from Amazon. I was hungry. I was AGITATED. After I threw a minor hissy fit, we decided it was time for FOOD! But more importantly, a margarita. It faces east, so no sun in your eyes; there aren’t any vendors or shops, so it’s nice and quiet; there are rocks everywhere, so you have places to sit; there are li’l tide pools, so you can watch the sea critters; there are shells and coral to collect (and then not take home, right? right?); the sand is delightfully coarse, so it feels nice on your feet and is easier to walk on. The whole place had an extremely relaxed feel, which is cool and always nice, but it also meant that the dives didn’t really seem that prepared. The employees all seemed like cool folks. I especially liked Pedro (a divemaster), the shop manager, and the lady who seemed to organize everything (I wish I knew her name!) I understand that I’m being a Karen about this, but: I hated the use of a diesel boat–the motor was so loud. The dive charter was very easy and relaxed. I was lucky in that there were only 4 divers and 6 divemasters. They were training some new employees so it was a very easy relaxed dive. This was Covid times still so there was a large line to show your Covid vaccine information. It wasn’t too difficult to deal with. Once we were through all that, it was time to pick up our car! I waited in line at AVIS while Alena did a little shopping and us some rum. Avis ended up being terrible. It was one other person and myself waiting for our cars. I kid you not, we waited for almost 2 hours while the entire airport emptied out. I still have no idea what took so long. In the island way, the desk clerks were taking their time and completely ignoring us. When we would complain, they just ignored us. When we FINALLY got our car, it was time to find a grocery store, get some supplies and head to our air bnb. This beach is quite famous for its crystal clear water and gorgeous landscape! It was only $5 USD per person to enter since it is a managed park and has facilities. We decided to spend a couple of hours here soaking up the sun! It was also here that we discovered Alena had forgotten to pack a BATHING SUIT! It was quite fun! I put on my snorkel gear and swam towards the island. There were markers on the bottom of the ocean indicating which way to go with fun little facts about the National Park on them. Coming here was like stepping back to 2008. The town is still very much embracing Twilight’s popularity. Though it feels very outdated at this point. It was a fun little side quest to do though! Mora Campgrounds are right outside La Push (also famous from Twilight). The drive there was gorgeous. So much green and towering trees. When we went to Mount Rainer, the area was almost completely covered in snow. We went to Sunrise Visitors center (after camping in nothing but a tarp and sleeping bags). They told us there was a small trail we could follow that would eventually end and would turn into a mountaineering hike without a path. It would be where people start the hike to ascend up to the base camp and eventually tot he peak. The hike is straight down with a series of switchbacks taking you down to the waters edge. Obviously, the hike down is quite easy (just watch your knees!) But the hike up is very difficult. Although it is only 1 mile, it can take alot of energy! However, it was absolutely worth it! I would not miss out on the opportunity to jump into this lake. The water was only 55 degrees! Starting at Rim Village, the drive will take you past all of the different overlooks with places to pull over and take in the sites! We actually only made it 10 miles but ended up turning around when it started to get dark. The hike takes you past TONS of big redwood trees. Majority of the hike is in shade (duh!), so although it is strenuous, it isn’t too hot, just humid! All along this hike, we saw TONS of cute banana slugs and black slugs. They were just as big as the redwoods! …compared to the average slug. One interesting thing we cam across was where a wildfire had occurred in the park. Redwoods have a natural fire retardant in their bark. It is home to the most popular hikes and campgrounds as well as the most popular redwoods, such as the Big Tree Wayside. He stands at 300ft tall, 7 ft around, and is over 1500 years old. This tree, which is one of the largest in the park, is also one of the most convenient to walk to! It is less then 200ft away from the parking lot! *Hyperion, which is largest tree in the park, is not listed on any maps as it’s location is protected. Water dripping has caused erosion to make the rock look like two eyes. This created a “temporary” lake. It is not uncommon to see water in Death Valley, though it is an unusually phenomenon to have it stick around for this long! It was quite a beautiful and unusual site I was lucky enough to see. There are spots to pull over and get a look at the multi-colored rocks and dirt as well as a small path you can walk to get to the most vibrant section. The road is one way, one lane. The town had 4,000 people in living in it during it’s heyday. There were stores, hotels, a school for over 200 children, opera house, even an ice cream parlor! Eventually the mine dried up though and the industry was shut down. The electricity was officially shut off to the town in 1916 and it became a ghost town. Whenever there is any water in this area, it is far to salty to be able to drink. During the winter months, you can walk along the salt flats. But during the summer, it was so hot, the second I stepped out there, the soles of my shoes started to melt! As a recreational scuba diver, this was a very exciting experience. The max average depth for a recreational scuba diver is only about 120 feet below sea level. Although the extra 2 miles is very strenuous, it is definitely worth it! The hike goes from a dirt path to stones that are usually covered in ice and stone in the winter. The path will take you right up to the only glacier in the state of Nevada. The hike also ends right at the base of Wheeler Peak. We arrived at the glacier around 2:30pm. In the sun, it was comfortable, but in the shade is was freezing! If we had started this hike any later, the glacier section would have been in the shade. This hike will take you up to the famous Bristlecones! The hike itself is somewhat strenuous because of the starting elevation (10,000ft) AND the elevation gain on the hike But it is well worth it. The Bristlecones found in this area of the park are thousands of years old. The oldest being over 4,000 years old! This means that these trees where sprouting when the Pyramids in Egypt were being built! One of the trees we stood in front of was already over 1,000 years old when Julius Caesar was in control of Rome. It was absolutely incredible and almost unfathomable how old these trees are. I could write an entire article about what makes these trees live so long, how they date them, and the history these trees hold. But feel free to do your own research. There is a nice little terrace with binoculars and diagrams of the park. It is about a mile from the Bristlecone Parking Area. We were hiking on the Bristlecone Grove Trail and decided to swing by on our way out. Teresa Lake was only an extra .2 miles of the trail. During the winter, this whole area will be covered in ice and snow. This is also known as a rock glacier and is only found in a couple of National Parks. However, like most popular hikes, the farther you go, the less people there are. At the entrance of the river, there were TONS of people congregated. However, once we started walking, it thinned out. Most people didn’t try to cross where the water was chest high. Once we got a mile down the river, the crowds had almost completely vanished. Only a few people passed us going both directions when we stopped for a snack. This hike is an out and back so you can go on for as long as you’d like. The beginning of the hike is against the current. It is further up Interstate 15, about 20 miles north of Washington County. I have been to Kolob more times than I can count! Most of the hikes in there area are quite strenuous and long, but the scenic drive up to the Kolob Canyon Viewpoint is BREATH TAKING! This incredible hike is NOT for the faint of heart. It got it’s name from the people saying it was so high “only angels could land there”. The hike itself takes you up, almost immediately….and it never stops. You start at the base of the canyon (at bus stop #6) and slowly wind your way up the mountain. Eventually, you will find yourself at “Walters, Wiggles”, a series of very steep switchbacks. The last mile of the hike however is a on a very narrow path, straight up with only chains and your wits keeping you from falling. But the end view is absolutely worth it. You have a first row seat to the entire park and all its glory. My only time hiking here, we arrived at the park at 5:30am, took the first shuttle at 6am, and started hiking around 6:30am. Seeing the sunrise as we began the hike and then the bright morning sun at the top was incredible. For us, in July of 2023, it had been a very heavy snow season so the snow run off filled the river quite high. The hike was about 90% in the water with a couple of dry spots to take a rest. The deepest point was up to our chests! This hike will close if the water level is too high, but it is up to you to avoid potential flash floods. This is a slot canyon after all. Do not hike if it is raining! We did hear thunder while we were in the slot canyon. As cool as it was, it was time to turn around! Permits are not given out the same day. Although this may be frustrating, due to the popularity of this hike (especially via Instagram), the hike was becoming severely over crowded and was becoming dangerous. Both will have an easy climb in but a difficult climb out. If you start at Sunrise point and head to the Queen’s Garden first, the slope down is steep but steady. But you will be hiking out of the canyon on the switchbacks in Navajo Loop. If you choose to start at Sunset point, it is a quick descend into the canyon via the switchbacks, but a long and winding descend out via the Queen’s Garden. It is a loop that takes you down into the canyon and through some of the famous picturesque areas. The Queens Garden is famous for having hoodoos that look like they are wearing crowns. The hike down starts at Sunrise Point. The trailhead is on a very steady slope which makes it easy to descend into the Canyon. On the return journey (it says a loop, but it is more of an in and out), you will climb up and out the same way you came in. But honestly, I am SO GLAD we did it. I have done it twice now! This hike takes ALL the way through Bryce Canyon from start to finish. I would suggest starting at Bryce Point since then it is a steady descend into the canyon over a couple miles and a quick ascend out of the canyon just under a mile. In 2020, my hiking buddy and I did the FULL LOOP! We did this because we had no choice. Typically, buses run, stopping at the Visitor’s Center, Sunset Point, Sunrise Point, Inspiration Point, and Bryce Point. But during the height of COVID shutdowns in May of 2020, there were no buses. Honestly, the hike kicked our butts. But it was SO rewarding. The squirrels you find at Sunset Point are famous for “clapping”. They are very very friendly and will reach out to you, hoping you’ll give them food in their little paws. It appears like they are clapping! This hike is a true loop that starts at Sunset Point. The switchbacks make your descend into the canyon and your ascend out of the canyon go very quickly, though it can be STRENUOUS. This hike is full of hoodoo (most famous being Thor's hammer), trees, and SHADE! The loop has two sides: Two Bridges and Wall Street. Because of the pandemic and the remoteness of the trailhead, there were almost NO people on this hike! The hike was strenuous for sure! 90% of it was in the sun. Even though it was in November, it was toasty. It is maintained with bathrooms though you are dispersed enough that it doesn’t feel like you are on top of your neighbors. We stayed in Superbowl Campground. We lost the trail a couple times so what was meant to be a 5 mile hike turned into an 8 hour hike. I am glad we had plenty of water and snacks! While The Needles has mostly day hikes, there are some very quick ones you can do as well. This hike in particular took us to an old cowboy camp with petroglyphs. Don’t be startled by the amount of people at the top. We started our hike later in the afternoon and there were about 100 people at the top by the arch. We stayed for a couple of hours. It was kind of nice because there was almost a natural “line” for people to take up close pictures at the arch. It seems very respectful. There was tons to look at around the arch since it was so high up. you got kind of a nice view of the park. VIRGIN ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK - This gorgeous beach is one of the farther stops along the main drag of beaches in the National Park. The water and sand here are pristine and it is the longest beach in St. John. The white sand goes on forever! You can also see the British Virgin Islands from this beach! Because Cinnamon Bay is a little farther, it tends to be a little more secluded and less crowded. Nice and peaceful! Then, there is a ferry you can take with a car over to the island for $65 USD. There are ferry’s just for passengers, but you will have a hard time getting around without a car. This was a fun and unique activity to do. There were markers all along the bottom with facts about the coral and the fish. When I was there, the line was broken, but there is usually a line you can follow to each marker. It is named because of a rock inlet that makes a thunderous “boom” when the waves come crashing through. This parking lot was also quite small, but, there was street parking as well. This is also just a get out and back in the car kind of stop. It had some of the best trails I have ever done. The scenery in the fall was drop dead gorgeous and aw inspiring. The beach is windy and the water is VERY cold. I do not recommend swimming! But it was nice touch the ocean! The area also has facilities. This parking lot is VERY small, and you just have to be lucky enough to pull in as someone is leaving. It is not for the faint of heart who have a fear of heights. The elevation gain is quick at the beginning as you walk through the woods. Eventually, you will come to climbing bars where you will ascend vertically. Although there are no severe drops (unlike Precipice Trail), it can still be a little nerve racking for those who are afraid of heights or have unsure footing/ footwear. Overall though, I thought it was an absolute blast. And the view was 1000% worth it! We decided to take the long way to Gorham Mt. It wasn’t too difficult, mostly just walking through the beautiful forest before ascending to the mountain peak for beautiful views of the colorful leaves and trees below! Once you are at the bottom, you will end at Thunder Hole and walk the Ocean Path Trail back to the parking lot. We broke the rules (unintentionally) and found ourselves in a fairly dangerous situation. This hike is similar to Beehive with the climbing rails HOWEVER, where it has vertical climbs, if you misstep, let go, or slip, you WILL fall. And you will fall far. Do not take this hike lightly. There is no parking lot for this hike. I am not really afraid of heights and I trust my abilities fairly well. But this is the first hike that scared me. Mostly because I felt like I had to take care of my buddy as well as myself. This was our last and final hike of the trip. We did it late in the afternoon, (after filling up on lobster and old fashions) assuming we would have enough time. However, a storm we did not anticipate rolled in. Which meant not only did we get about halfway up when it started to rain, but it also got dark FAST. This hike is a one way in that once you reach the vertical spots, it is too dangerous to turn around. The only way is up. It starts out with some basic rock scrambling with a couple of mild vertical climbs (to make sure you are comfortable with it before being 1000ft off the ground). I am so glad we did! There was almost no one past the North Bubble and we found this INCREDIBLE overlook. The changing colors of the leaves and the rocky mountains made for some amazing views. We chose to do it at as our night hike. Acadia is known for being a great park to go star gazing. We were unlucky and chose a cloudy night! Put this path around the pong is either paved or board walked the whole way around. We also chose to do it at night because this parking lot was IMPOSSIBLE during the day. This is one of the view “accessible” hikes in the park so the older population tends to be here. There is also a restaurant as well. Majority of the hike the rest of the way up is holding on the climber rungs while dangling off the sides of the mountain. There a couple of mild resting spots, but you start to go up pretty fast. Doing this in the rain is particularly dangerous because the rungs and the rocks become slippery. There are some part where you are shimming on a slopped rock only about 8 inches wide while holding onto the rungs. Even during the day, I could see this hike being daunting. We still had to get back down to our car and we couldn’t go the way we came. The hike ends at the top of Champlain Mt. obviously I can’t speak to the views since it was pitch black by the time we got to the top, but I am sure they are great! The decent down was slow going because of the rain. The path is marked with blue spray paint strips. It was like playing hide a seek with our flashlights to find the next mark. I am sure it is much easier during the day. Eventually you meet up with Orange and Black Trail when you are at the bottom of Champlain Mt. This trail will take you back to the road. It was a short walk back to our car from there! Although you can hike it (2.1 miles one way, 1,200 ft elevation gain), we chose not to due to parking being full by 4:30am! We decided instead to drive up to the submit for the sunset. You will need to make a reservation if you want to drive on Cadillac Mountain at all. I would recommend a couple weeks in advance! But watching the sunset at the summit was AMAZING. You could see the whole park. Although your GPS will take you right to entrance (about a mile from the visitors center) of the falls along the main, there is no parking and you MUST do the whole hike to see the falls. The hike was surprisingly challenging? Though it may have been because I was fighting with time, trying to get there and back in a hour before it got dark! So I was jogging most of the way. There are lots of ups and downs and a couple of VERY daunting rock staircases after you have been hiking a while. But it was worth it! It has just rained that day, the ground was muddy and slippery, but it meant the falls were in full force! Overall, I really enjoyed this hike. It was peaceful and I never came across another hiker. This trail, which is easily accessible and paved, follows the old canals where you can see the old locks (very cute mini versions) starting at Lock 39. There are plenty of different places to start along this trail, some areas with visitor centers and facilities. For me, I stuck to a mile out and back from the parking lot because it was POURING down rain and I was not equipped. But I am so glad I did! From the parking lot, there is a quick little jaunt down a boardwalk and within 5 minutes, you are at Brandywine Falls. There are stairs that lead you down and little closer to the falls before you can continue on the trail, taking you down to the river bed. The trail was fairly easy with rocks and packed dirt for 50% of the trail. After seeing the falls, the trail takes you through the forest, across the river, and back to the parking lot. I did this hike right at dusk and felt quite comfortable. There were LOTS of squirrels and birds. There is a parking lot at the end of short dirt road (turn right before you get to a private neighborhood). The hike is fairly easy, like a nice stroll through the woods with nice fauna and flora. Past the bath house is a bridge with stairs down to the beach where you can see Chicago on the other side of Lake Michigan! I went during sunset which was an absolutely GRORGEOUS time to go. This area is also known as Diana’s Dune. Diana was an iconic woman who left her busy life in Chicago to live in a shack on the sand dunes across the river. You can read all about her in the visitors center as well as at the bath house. This area has the “Diana of the Dune’s Dare”. You will see “graffiti” dating back to the 1800’s. These name were burned into the rocks using nothing but torches. A famous tour guide, Stephen Bishop, was an enslaved worker in the cave. At the time, he had explored and discovered more of the cave then anyone else. Eventually he would give tours to people who wanted to see the caves (and the mummies!) themselves. It is $20 a person. This entrance to the cave is one of the only “natural” openings. Salt peter was mined here and used for gunpowder. In 1842, Dr. John Croghan believed the damp, controlled, cool climate of the caves would help alleviate if not cure those suffering from consumption. He purchased an area of the cave and build limestone buildings (some of which are still standing) to house his patients. Patients did begin to see vast improvement, though they could never leave the cave. The Domes and Dripstone tour is $21 a person and the shorter Frozen Niagara is $18 and much easier and accessible for those not interested in stairs. Both of this tours require a short little bus ride from the visitors center. This tour will focus of the scientific history and formation of the caves. In here, you will see great examples of stalagmites and stalactites. Domes and Dripstones has quite a view stairs and will end at Frozen Niagara.
